Health, Culture, and Diversity

Course Description

This course explores the intersection of culture, health, and healing across diverse populations and medical systems. Students examine how cultural beliefs, practices, and environments shape health outcomes, disease patterns, and healing approaches. The course compares Western biomedical models with various ethno-medical systems, analyzing different types of healers and healing rituals. Through critical examination of historic trauma, marginalization, and social determinants of health, students develop skills to design culturally responsive health promotion interventions. Topics include environmental health relationships, culturally-driven health vulnerabilities, and analysis of federal Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards and frameworks for addressing health disparities in marginalized communities.
